This self-paced, online training course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, tools, and strategies required to perform effectively on a Board in the not-for-profit sector and shelter system.
This course has two levels of completion:
1. General Board Governance Certificate
2. Board Governance in Shelters
Learners have the option of obtaining either or both certificates.

- Module 1 – Introduction to Board Governance
- Module 2 – Advanced Board Governance
2. Board Governance in Shelters Certificate
- Module 3 – Board Governance in Shelters
Module 1 – Introduction to Governance
Topics for this module include: Not-For-Profit Sector and the Purpose of the Board; Board Obligations and Responsibilities and Governing the Organization, followed by a quiz and activity.
Module 2 – Advanced Board Governance
Topics for this module include: Board Management; Board Relationships; Planning; Fundraising; Setting an Agenda; Effective Discussions and Board Recruitment, followed by an activity, activity quiz and module quiz.
Module 3 – Board Governance in Shelters
Topics for this module include: Understanding the Shelter System; Purchase-of-Service Contracts; Accountability; Shelter Board Obligations; Service Delivery Models; Emergency Preparation and Risk Management; Including People with Lived Experience in Decision and Questions Board Members Can Ask the Executive Director, followed by a quiz.
Optional Module – Six Types of Shelter Situations
This module has 18 common scenarios that fall under six Types of Shelter Situations. Participants can choose to complete any one or all of the 18 scenarios that occur in six Types of Shelter Situations.
Target Audience: Executive Directors, Board Members working for non-profit organizations or shelters and anyone interested in learning about the impact board leadership has on organizational success.
Participants should expect to invest four to six hours to complete this course. To obtain proof of completion, all course requirements must be completed within 30 days of enrolment.
